Many people with the desire to work at home start with customer service jobs. It is one of the most popular online jobs with companies always looking to hire new agents for their call centers. If you’re interested in joining one of the call centers or form your own call center company from home, then you should know the requirements asked before starting.
Most of them do not expect you to pay any fees, but you’d have to pay for your own equipment if you don’t already have them. Now keep in mind, since all companies all different, they will have different requirements. So, what do most call centers require before starting working from home?.
Most call center firms would simply require that you have at least a high school diploma, a GED, or an equivalent.
Skills & Experiences
Attention to detail: It’s a no-brainer; you’ll be taking multiple calls for hours at a time and sometimes record data. If you’re not very attentive, it’d be easy to miss crucial information. Even though it’s human to make mistakes, you wouldn’t want to make too many mistakes because that could hurt the status of your employment with the company.
Fast Typing: Expect to be required to fast at least 45/wpm (words per minute); some require more.
Experience in Customer Service: Some companies hire entry level but expect some companies to require at least 1-2 years of customer service experience.
All call centers will require you to have a quiet place with no background noise. So if you have children, make sure you get someone else to watch them while you work. If you have loud pets, it’s probably not a good idea to have them next to you during work hours. I would advise you to keep a designated place for work where only you would be when you’re on the clock.
Internet: A fast hard-wire broadband internet connection is usually required. That’s understandable since you would be working virtually. If you have DSL, you’ll be one step closer to fulfilling many companies’ requirements.
Computer: Even though most companies seem to require PC, some wouldn’t mind if you have a Mac. Many companies will ask for a Microsoft operating system.
Phone: Since you’d be speaking to clients, expect to be asked for a landline and NOT a cellphone, Skype, GoogleVoice, or any other VoIP phone services. Most companies will not tolerate anything else but a landline.
Headset: Make sure to get a wired headset with noise-canceling microphone to minimize background noise.
Webcam: This is not for call centers. If you get jobs like teaching or tutoring, companies often require an HD webcam.
Software: This doesn’t usually come under requirements for call center jobs, but sometimes it may.
Printer/Scanner: This isn’t always required, but some companies do require it. If you do get a printer, it would be convenient to get one with a scanner.
Email: You would obviously need an email address to communicate with your employers.
