The immune system is the first line of defense for the body to fight viral infections and foreign invaders. To avoid getting sick, it’s important to boost the immune system and keep it as strong as possible.
Let’s explore some of the actions we can take to contribute to naturally boosting our immune system.
Do regular exercise
We all know that exercising regularly not only makes us feel better internally, it also keeps us in shape. Staying active boosts the immune system or makes it easy to bounce back from illnesses.
People often get discouraged from exercising because they think that to be fit, it’s required to workout everyday for hours at a time. The truth is, overdoing anything could have the reverse effect; depending on the person.
Regular exercise can be as little as working out for 5 to 10 minutes a day. Exercising every other day is another method, or even 4 to 5 days a week.
Get enough sleep
Many of us often feel unproductive when we sleep for hours because we think that time could have been used towards getting a project done. But we fail to realize that we’re human beings who need sleep to function well. Allah created us like that, so it’s part of our nature to rest before getting things done.
An over-tired body actually performs much less than one that is well rested. Getting at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night resets our body and boosts our immune system.
Follow good hygiene
It goes without saying, it’s important to be clean in order to remain healthy. There are germs and bacteria all around us. When we go outside and mingle with others or touch various surfaces, we collect more germs.
Simple ways to follow good hygiene is by regularly washing our hands (especially when we come from outside), taking showers, brushing our teeth, clipping our nails, cleaning our clothes and cleaning items that we touch around the house. We don’t need to wait for a pandemic to practice these simple hygiene routines.
As Muslims, cleanliness is a huge part of our religion.
“Purity is half of faith, and the praise of Allah fills the scale …” Sahih Muslim
It actually is an essential part of Islam.
Avoid stress as much as possible
It’s challenging to avoid stress especially if you live in an industrial world. In addition to social and family issues, many of us deal with extra bills, debts, etc. However, that shouldn’t stop us from striving to avoid it as much as we can.
Stress has been known to be a huge contributing factor to many illnesses. It weakens the immune system, which makes it easier for foreign invaders to attach our body.
Some ways to avoid stress is to avoid triggers as much as possible and address issue that usually result in stress.
As they say, “you are what you eat.” What we consume on a regular basis can dictate the outcome of our health. Eating healthy and nutritional food such as raw vegetables, greens, fruits, and other healthy meals help boost the immune system.
Avoid unhealthy habits
It’s not always about what you need to do, but also what needs to be avoided. If you eat healthy but have other unhealthy habits that negatively affect your body, it almost defeats the purpose.
Some of the unhealthy habits to avoid are over-eating, eating too much junk food, eating too much fried food, smoking (either highly discouraged or forbidden in Islam) and drinking alcohol (clearly forbidden in Islam).
